The Community of Birmingham recently commemorated the memory of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke with great solemnity and reverence. Presiding over the sacred services and feast was Bishop Maximos of Melitene, who was joined by several clergymen from the surrounding areas.
On the eve of the feast, the faithful gathered for Vespers, during which the traditional Artoklasia was held. The air was filled with a sense of devotion and anticipation as the congregation awaited the sacred moments that followed. The Divine Word was preached by Protopresbyter Stephen Maxfield, whose eloquent sermon brought to life the teachings and example of Saint Luke.
Following this, Bishop Maximos delivered a profound homily, expanding upon the multifaceted contributions of the Apostle Luke to the Church. He emphasized Saint Luke’s dual role as an Evangelist and historian, noting that his Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles provide an invaluable account of the early Christian Church.
A particularly moving element of the celebration was the presence of a relic of Saint Luke the Apostle. This precious relic, offered last year by the Holy Metropolis of Kition, was brought to the Community of the Apostle Luke in Birmingham by Bishop Maximos when Metropolitan Nektarios of Kition visited Cyprus. The faithful were given the sacred opportunity to venerate the relic, and many approached it with visible reverence, offering prayers for healing and spiritual guidance. The presence of the relic heightened the spiritual significance of the feast and served as a tangible connection to the life of the saint.
The celebrations continued throughout the weekend, culminating on Sunday, October 20, 2024. Official meals were hosted on both Friday, October 18, and Sunday, October 20, providing a time for fellowship among the community members.
