The Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate elected Archimandrite Kallinikos Mavroleon as Bishop of Medeia during its session on Thursday, July 23, 2026, held at the Patriarchal Church of St. George at the Phanar.
The newly elected bishop, who will serve as an auxiliary bishop, succeeds to the titular See of Medeia following the unanimous decision of the members of the Holy and Sacred Synod.
Born Nikolaos Mavroleon in Piraeus in 1959, the Bishop-elect traces his family roots to the islands of Karpathos and Kasos.
He is a graduate of the Marasleios Pedagogical Academy and the Department of Social Theology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
Before entering full-time ecclesiastical ministry, he served as a primary school teacher for 33 years. Since 1991, he has continuously served the Holy Metropolis of Karpathos and Kasos as a parish priest, preacher, and confessor.
In the same year, he was tonsured a monk at the Xeropotamou Monastery on Mount Athos. He was subsequently ordained as a deacon and later as a presbyter.
Since 2010, Archimandrite Kallinikos has served as Abbot of the Patriarchal and Stavropegial Monastery of St. George Vasses on Karpathos, where he has carried out extensive pastoral, spiritual, and educational work.
With his election, Bishop-elect Kallinikos brings decades of experience in education, parish ministry, monastic leadership, and pastoral service to his new episcopal ministry under the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
