The issue concerning Bishop Tychikos is considered closed by the Holy Synod, according to Archdiocese of Cyprus spokesperson Christakis Efstathiou, who spoke on the television program Alpha Kalimera.
Efstathiou stated that Bishop Tychikos’ appeal to the Supreme Court of Cyprus, seeking the annulment of the Synod’s decision to remove him from the Metropolitan Throne of Paphos, places the matter in a different legal sphere. He noted that there are precedents, recalling a similar attempt by the former Archimandrite of the Monastery of Avvakoum, Nektarios, who had also appealed to annul a penalty imposed by the Holy Synod.
“In that case as well, there was a clear position taken by the judge handling the matter,” Efstathiou said, stressing that “civil courts cannot intervene in the affairs of the Church.”
He emphasized that the Church holds a distinct and constitutionally protected position, allowing it to regulate its own affairs in accordance with its Charter, ecclesiastical law, and canon law. Asked whether the appeal causes concern to the Church, Efstathiou responded negatively, reiterating that for the Holy Synod the matter is considered concluded.
“It is up to Bishop Tychikos himself to handle his affairs,” he said. “He has the right to make whatever choices are available to him. However, from that point onward, he assumes responsibility for those choices, since for the Church, I repeat, the issue is considered closed.”
It is recalled that the Holy Synod is scheduled to convene again in an extraordinary session on Wednesday, in order to amend the Church’s Charter with regard to the procedure for the election of Metropolitans.
