The Archdiocesan Council of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Canada held a successful virtual meeting on Tuesday, February 22, 2022.
Presided by Archbishop Sotirios, Council members from across the country gathered to receive pertinent briefings and discuss relevant issues. However, because current public health restrictions necessitated a virtual meeting, a streamlined agenda was developed and followed.
The meeting began with all members standing to recite the Lord’s Prayer and the Bible reading, “I have learned to be content” Phil. 4:11. This was followed by the Archbishop’s report that included key updates, initiatives, and developments of the Archdiocese. Following discussion amongst members, six reports were tabled, discussed, and approved, as below:
1. Legal Report (Archon George Karayannides)
2. Financial Report (Archon Jim Anas)
3. Patriarchal Toronto Orthodox Theological Academy (Bishop Athenagoras)
4. Youth (Bishop Iakovos)
5. Archdiocesan Council of the Philoptochos in Canada (Zoe Veroutis)
6. Internet and Social Media Ministries (Archon Evagelos Sotiropoulos)
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Archbishop warmly thanked and expressed his gratitude to all members, and especially the reverend clergy, for their work to support and promote the Church and the Orthodox faith in Canada, particularly during the challenges faced by all as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Archbishop encouraged all members to deepen their commitment and work, especially as we prepare to begin Holy and Great Lent, with a focus on engaging and attracting our youth across Canada.
The meeting, which was held in a family-like atmosphere, concluded with the chanting of Phos Hilaron and the Fimi of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. Finally, the Archbishop glorified the Triune God and asked all participants to strengthen their prayers and ask for peace to prevail in Eastern Europe and for our brothers and sisters in Christ who are under threat in Ukraine.
