“All the Great Orthodox Church Fathers teach us that there is a unity between the soul and body of human beings and that physical activity is beneficial to the soul,” said Archbishop Chrysostomos II of Cyprus today, in his speech at the closing event of the “I Care About Myself: Physical Activity and Ergonomics”.
Archbishop Chrysostomos said, “in contrast to some ancient Greek philosophers who considered the body to be a “prison of the soul”, which had to be released from this prison to return to the World of Ideas, in the Orthodox Christian tradition, “the body lives through the soul while the soul acts through the body”.
“According to St. Ioannis of Damascus, man is made up of the ‘visible and invisible nature’. A human being is a body and soul unity. So if gymnastics enhances body health, it also improves our soul’s health,” he said.
