Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus conveyed profound grief and shock over the tragic wildfires currently ravaging the island. In his written statement, he said:
“I express my deepest shock at the tragedy affecting our island due to the destructive wildfires still raging. Our sorrow and pain are beyond words—for the loss of human lives, the injured, and those who lost their homes and possessions, bearing their own heavy crosses in this terrible ordeal.
At this moment, many words are unnecessary. We emphasize the need for calm in facing the situation and offering every possible support to our brothers and sisters struck by the fiery storms during these critical hours. Our thoughts and prayers embrace them with all the warmth of our love and solidarity.
In these tragic times, the Church of Cyprus and I personally stand in solidarity with those affected, sharing wholeheartedly in their unbearable pain.
We also extend our love and support to the Fire Service, Police, medical and nursing staff, Civil Defense, all state services, and volunteer groups fighting this unequal battle.
We pray that God may rest the souls of our brothers who lost their lives so suddenly and strengthen and comfort their grieving families. We also wish a swift recovery and strength to the injured.
The Church of Cyprus will soon explore ways to support our affected fellow citizens.”
