Archbishop Justin Welby of Canterbury said that the Church should reconsider the portrayal of Jesus as a white man.
The head of the Anglican Church, according to international media, said that in the light of the recent Black Lives Matter movement, the Church of England should reconsider the way Jesus is portrayed.
Speaking to the BBC, he said that Jesus was portrayed in many different ways around the world as there were different cultures, languages and perspectives.
“You go into their churches and you don’t see a White Jesus — you see a Black Jesus, or Chinese Jesus, or a Middle Eastern Jesus,” he said. He also argued that we should not eradicate everything we have in the Western tradition, but he made it clear that it was not the icons of Jesus that we worship. However, he said that it was “a reminder of the universality of God who became fully human.”
