On April 4, 2025, Archbishop Sotirios of Canada met with Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, at the Cultural Centre of the Holy Archdiocese.
His Eminence congratulated Prime Minister Carney on becoming Canada’s twenty-fourth prime minister last month. The Archbishop provided a brief overview of the Church in Canada and matters concerning the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
The Prime Minister engaged in a warm and thoughtful discussion. Sincere appreciation was expressed for his kindness and consideration.
The Archbishop presented the Prime Minister with an icon that included his Patron Saint, the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Mark. Prime Minister Carney expressed gratitude for the gift and reflected on the current Lenten period and the journey toward Pascha.
His Eminence was accompanied by Fr. Evangelos Athanassoulas, Dean of the St. Nicholas Cathedral; Evagelos Sotiropoulos, President of the Ecumenical Patriarchate Archons in Canada; and Anastasia Sotiropoulos, President of the St. Nicholas Cathedral Community Council.
Before departing, the Archbishop once again thanked Prime Minister Carney and extended wishes for continued strength and wisdom to him and all elected officials as they strive to safeguard and promote the interests of the country.
Following the meeting, His Eminence traveled to the Saints Panteleimon, Anna and Paraskevi Greek Orthodox Church in Markham for the service of the Akathist Hymn to the Most-Holy Theotokos.
