Archbishop Makarios of Australia warmly welcomed the newly appointed Consul General of Greece in Sydney, Mr. Georgios Skemperis.
On Thursday, August 21, the newly arrived Greek diplomat paid his first official visit to the headquarters of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia. He was accompanied by the Ambassador of Greece to Australia, Mr. Stavros Venizelos.
The Consul General was first guided through the historic Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Theotokos, where he was particularly impressed by the iconographic compositions that now adorn the church following its recent renovation.
He was then welcomed in the Archiepiscopal Office by Archbishop Makarios, surrounded by the Bishops of the Holy Eparchial Synod. The Archbishop greeted Mr. Skemperis as being “at home” and expressed confidence that the excellent and fruitful cooperation between the Consulate General and the Archdiocese would continue seamlessly.
Following the meeting, a luncheon was offered, during which the participants discussed matters concerning the life of the Greek diaspora, as well as the presence and mission of the Orthodox Church in Australia. Warm wishes were extended to the new Consul General for a fruitful and productive tenure.
