Archbishop Makarios of Australia focuses on our relationship with God—which is not transactional in nature, but existential and part of our process of spiritual maturation—in a video message posted on Instagram.
At the outset, the Archbishop observes: “We bring our petitions before God and grow anxious when we do not receive answers. We are troubled, wondering why God does not respond. Yet in truth, we seek answers with anxiety, with impatience with ego. We desire specific responses. We want God to answer our requests affirmatively.”
“And yet, the essence of our relationship with God is not transactional, but deeply existential,” the Archbishop emphasizes, explaining: “We learn from God’s ‘no.’ We learn from God’s silence. We learn by waiting to face the truths of life without agitation and anxiety. In the end, it is more beneficial for us not to rush, but to allow our hearts to beat at a natural pace.”
“All of this is a process of spiritual maturity and growth,” Archbishop Makarios concludes, adding that “God will answer us when we are truly ready to receive an answer that will benefit us and help us move forward.”
