Archbishop Makarios of Australia has issued a message of condolence following the tragic deaths of the three firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty while battling the devastating wildfires in Rethymno and Gytheio.
In his message, the Archbishop states:
“Our motherland, Greece, has been plunged into mourning over the loss of three brave men, three people who selflessly served on the front line of the battle against the devastating wildfires in Rethymno and Gytheio.
The Greeks of the Fifth Continent mourn together with the Greek people, and our thoughts turn especially to the families and colleagues of the firefighters who sacrificed their lives while striving to protect their fellow human beings and the natural environment.
On behalf of our Holy Archdiocese and the entire Greek community, I express my sincere condolences and pray that God may grant rest to the souls of the firefighters who fell in the line of duty, bestow consolation and strength upon their grieving loved ones, and strengthen the personnel of the Fire Service and all those who continue the arduous struggle on the fire fronts.”
