Archbishop Makarios of Australia took part to the conference about on the Autocephaly of Ukraine and the war which was organized by the Organization for the Promotion of Greek and Orthodox Culture “Aenaos”.
He stressed that “what is happening today is the consequences of a sick ecclesiological situation.
From 1433 to the present day, the Russians try to surround every illegality they commit and every Babylonian dream of expansionism they have with spirituality and supposed regularity. When in 1448 they seceded from the Patriarchate by electing the Metropolitan of Kyiv from the local Synod, they claimed that they did so because Isidore, who had been elected by Constantinople, was unitary. He attended the Ferrara summit.
This was only an easy excuse to cover up their canonical misconduct. Because in 1433, and of course before the election of Isidore, they had elected Razian Jonah as Metropolitan of Kyiv, again schismatically and fragmentarily without asking the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
Now the Church of Moscow is blessing the war, which is unacceptable theologically and canonically. But they have found the excuse again. They’re going to Ukraine to de-satanize it. They are waging war to drive out the devil and all the evils that come from the West. And unfortunately, Patriarch Kirill in his sermons distorts both the Gospel and Orthodox Theology.
He presented the example of God, who gave up his Son to be sacrificed. And addressing the Russians, he called on them to sacrifice themselves in the war against Ukraine. He promised them paradise and holiness if they testify about their homeland. The Church of Russia behaves like an ecclesiastical underworld. They try to establish everything spiritually and theologically, but this cannot be achieved.”
Archbishop Makarios stressed that what is happening is not the consequences of autocephaly, but the consequences of a sick thought, which should concern us.
“Our Russian brothers live on the level of a parallel ecclesiastical reality. And what they have been doing for years is creating a parallel Orthodoxy. Know that they will never keep up with the rest of the Orthodox world. Their plan is to dominate what it entails. I am a little disappointed on a personal level that some Churches do not react. They tolerate the new theology of war, they tolerate the expansionist policy of Moscow and, above all, they accept the ecclesiastical perversion that is being created.
Do the other Churches not see what is going on? Moscow is trying to create a parallel Orthodox world, which has nothing to do with the real Orthodox world. And we tolerate all this and we bless it with our silence,” he concluded.
