“The spiritual life in the Orthodox Church is joy and freedom,” emphasises His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia in his most recent message of spiritual edification, delivered via the Instagram social media platform.
“Therefore, do whatever you can,” he notes, while clarifying that “each person is distinct and unique.”
“Every person,” he explains, “has specific limits and capacities. Not everyone is suited to the same struggles, and for this reason the Church does not prescribe a single formula for holiness. Do not pressure others to do what you yourselves do. Do not even pressure your children regarding Christ and the Church, especially when your own life does not align with what you teach and what you ask of your children.”
“Try to do only one thing: to acquire a personal relationship with Christ,” he urges in conclusion. “For what is truly important,” he adds, “is not to learn Christ’s teaching by heart, but to come to know Him through personal experience.”
