Archbishop Makarios of Australia published a thoughtful spiritual reflection on social media, highlighting the true purpose and responsibility of Christians in the face of wrongdoing.
“The purpose of the Christian is not to condemn evil, but to correct it,” he wrote, drawing a clear distinction between judgment and compassionate engagement. “To condemn means to judge; to correct means to suffer and to love.”
He emphasized that condemnation often stems from a lack of self-awareness:
“To condemn means that I have not yet come to know myself, nor have I accepted my own passions and faults.”
Correction, however, reflects humility, perseverance, and faith:
“To correct means that I struggle and that I believe, I hope, and I place my expectation in the mercy of God.”
Through his message, Archbishop Makarios invited the faithful to embrace a spirit of love, patience, and inner transformation—choosing empathy over judgment and trusting in divine mercy as the foundation of true Christian life.
