Archbishop Makarios of Australia met with the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, on Monday, November 3, in Athens.
The Archbishop, accompanied by Bishop Kyriakos of Melbourne, was warmly received by the Greek Prime Minister at the Maximos Mansion.
The meeting took place in a cordial and constructive atmosphere, with discussions focusing on issues of mutual interest, particularly the needs of the Greek diaspora in Australia. Special emphasis was placed on the pending agreement between Greece and Australia to avoid double taxation, a matter which, as the Prime Minister noted, is expected to be successfully concluded soon.
Archbishop Makarios briefed Mitsotakis on the activities and initiatives of the Orthodox Church in Australia and reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to preserving the Greek identity of the diaspora and strengthening their ties with the motherland.
Prime Minister Mitsotakis congratulated Archbishop Makarios for the Church’s significant contribution to Hellenism in the fifth continent and assured him that the Greek Government will continue to care for and actively support the Greek diaspora. He also expressed his intention to visit Australia during the first half of 2026.
