On Tuesday, May 6, Archbishop Makarios of Australia received in Athens Bishops Elpidios of Perth, Silouan of Adelaide and Kyriakos of Melbourne, along with a group of lay people from the fifth continent. They are participating in a 14-day pilgrimage organized by the Holy Archdiocese of Australia, with scheduled visits to the Greek capital, Constantinople, and Tbilisi, Georgia.
On the same day, the pilgrims, led by the Archbishop, visited the Acropolis Museum, where they were greeted on behalf of the Minister of Culture, Mrs. Lina Mendoni, by Mrs. Sofia Stavropoulou, Director of Event Hospitality. They were then given a guided tour by archaeologist Ms. Katerina Diamantidou.
Archbishop Makarios warmly thanked the Museum staff for their gracious welcome and informative tour. He expressed his admiration for the architecture and philosophy of the Museum, as well as for the exhibits that adorn its collections. He emphasized the uniqueness of the artifacts, noting that their special value lies in the fact that they are all Greek and none of them has been stolen. He pointedly stated: “We are proud because everything in here is ours – and nothing was stolen.”
