Archbishop Makarios of Australia, through a recorded message shared on the social media platform Instagram, extended his paternal wishes on the Feast of the Nativity according to the flesh of our Lord Jesus Christ, while also making special reference to the recent deadly terrorist attack in Sydney—an event that plunged Australian society into mourning just days before the joyful and hope-filled celebration of Christmas.
The Archbishop, reiterating his unequivocal condemnation of every form of fanaticism and violence, noted that “during these days, the days of Christmas, we all reflect on the greatness of our faith.” “Christ was born, and a revolution took place,” he emphasized, reminding the faithful that the teaching of our Lord includes a profound transcendence: love for one’s enemies.
As he pointed out, “Christ came and told us, ‘do not kill,’ ‘do not act unjustly,’ ‘do not cause harm.’ But He also told us something even higher and more beautiful: ‘Love your enemies.’” He continued: “Make a transcendence. Move beyond logic and the merely human. Live what is beyond nature. Live what reveals the greatness of the human soul.”
Archbishop Makarios concluded his message with the prayer that “the birth of Christ may bring peace and joy to the whole world.” The post is followed by the full video message.
