Archbishop Makarios of Australia shared a thoughtful reflection on social media, reminding the faithful that true beauty lies not in outward appearances but in the depth of one’s character.
“Beauty is not found in what is external, but in what lies within,” the Archbishop wrote. “For this reason, learn to value a person’s character rather than their outward appearance. If you choose based on external features, they will disappoint you. With time, you will come to realise that external characteristics change – they fade and deteriorate. The first wrinkles begin to appear, hair turns grey, and so on.”
He continued by highlighting that inner beauty, unlike external charm, only deepens with the passage of time. “But if you choose character, you will find yourself continually surprised, for true character grows ever richer day by day. It deepens, learns from both joy and sorrow, becomes wiser, gentler, more compassionate, and more beautiful.”
Concluding his message, Archbishop Makarios urged his followers to reflect on their values and choices: “Therefore, choose carefully what you truly seek in others.”
