Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece met this morning with members of the Organizing Committee of the International Conference on Orthodox Theology, titled “Orthodox Theology in the 21st Century: Challenges and Prospects.” The meeting focused on the objectives and outcomes of the conference, as well as the critical role of Orthodox Theology in contemporary society.
The delegation, representing the conference organized by the Theological School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, included Metropolitan Gregorios of Peristeri, Professor Emmanuel Karageorgoudis (Dean of the Theological School), Fr. Isidoros Katsos, Stavros Giagkazoglou, Efstathios Lianos-Liantis, Eirini Kasapi, Fotios Apostolos, and Nikolaos Denaxas. The event was held from November 24 to 28 under the auspices of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece.
The conference explored the position and mission of the Orthodox Church and Theology within the evolving historical, geopolitical, social, and cultural landscapes of the 21st century. It sought to highlight the Church’s enduring heritage, practical ministry, and prophetic witness while addressing its role in modern society.
Discussions at the conference focused on several key themes, including the relationship of Orthodox Theology with the Church, universities, and society. It also examined its dialogue with fields such as science, technology, arts, culture, and modern theological and spiritual movements, offering a critical reassessment of Orthodox Theology’s contributions to these domains.
Archbishop Ieronymos praised the efforts of the organizing committee and emphasized the importance of such initiatives in strengthening the Church’s voice and relevance in today’s complex and rapidly changing world.
