The Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Ieronymos II of Athens, expressed his heartfelt condolences to the Holy Synod, clergy, and faithful of the Georgian Orthodox Church on the passing of the late Patriarch Ilia II of Georgia.
In a letter addressed to Metropolitan Shio of Senaki, Locum Tenens of the Patriarchal Throne, Archbishop Ieronymos stated that he received the news of the Patriarch’s repose “with deep sorrow and heartfelt contrition,” highlighting his long and blessed pastoral ministry.
He noted that the late Patriarch, “in times of turbulence and hardship, revealed himself as an unshakable pillar of faith and a vigilant guardian of the people of God,” emphasizing that his voice was consistently “a sober call to peace, prudence, and reconciliation.”
At the same time, the Archbishop stressed that the departed hierarch “passes from death into life, leaving behind a sacred and invaluable legacy,” and offered prayers that “the Lord of Glory may grant rest to his soul in the land of the living.”
Concluding his message, Archbishop Ieronymos conveyed the sincere condolences of both himself and the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, praying that the memory of the late Patriarch Ilia II may be eternal.
