Archbishop Elpidophoros of America sent his own message on the death of Manolis Glezos, on social media.
Veteran resistance fighter Manolis Glezos has died at the age of 98, it was announced on Monday. An active member of Greece’s resistance to the Nazis, Glezos is best known for joining forces with fellow teenager Apostolos Santas in 1941 and tearing down the Nazi flag from the Acropolis, at a time when occupying German forces held Athens.
In his message, the Archbishop of America, emphasizes that “We will always remember the hero Manolis Glezos, who on May 1941 tore down the Nazi flag from the Acropolis. His constant readiness to sacrifice himself for our homeland inspires us in these difficult times. May your memory be eternal, our late lamented brother.”
