The anniversary of the death of African-American George Floyd, who fell victim to excessive and racist police violence, was commemorated in a post on social media by Archbishop Elpidophoros of America.
The Archbishop of America, who led the peaceful protest march in Brooklyn last year, following in the footsteps of his predecessor, Archbishop Iakovos, called on everyone to unite in the fight for racial justice for every human being, in every corner of the globe.
In fact, he stressed, “We must all redouble our efforts in this direction so that the tragic death of George Floyd will give rise to works of peace and justice, which will pave the way for a better and fairer society in the future.”
The assassination of George Floyd led to the creation of the Black Lives Matter movement and sparked a struggle to combat systemic racism that still rages in the United States.
In fact, on the facade of the American embassy in Athens, on Queen Sofia Avenue, a huge banner was hung yesterday in which the name of the Black Lives Matter movement was written in memory of George Floyd.
On this anniversary of the death of George Floyd, let us join together and redouble our efforts for racial justice for all people. Let his death be a cause for the peaceful and righteous work that leads to a better and more equitable society for everyone.
