Archbishop Ioannis of Tirana Durres and All Albania has sent a message of condolences to Metropolitan Shio of Senaki and Chkhorotsku, following the passing of Patriarch Ilia II of Georgia.
In his letter, addressed to the Locum Tenens of the Patriarchal Throne of Georgia, Archbishop Ioannis stated that he received the news of the Patriarch’s falling asleep in the Lord “with deep sorrow,” describing him as a “most beloved brother and concelebrant.”
The Archbishop emphasized that Patriarch Ilia II guided the Georgian Church for nearly five decades “with wisdom, patience and deep faith.” He noted that the late Primate was distinguished by his upright character, devotion to Orthodox tradition, and love for the faithful, as well as his firm commitment to the unity of Orthodoxy.
Referring to the difficult historical circumstances of his ministry, Archbishop Ioannis recalled that Patriarch Ilia II assumed leadership during the period of Soviet oppression. He stressed that the late Patriarch shepherded his flock “with self-sacrifice and prudence,” helping to rebuild the Church, restore places of worship, and inspire a return to the faith.
Archbishop Ioannis extended his “heartfelt condolences” to the Holy Synod, clergy, and faithful of the Georgian Orthodox Church, acknowledging the profound loss experienced by the entire Church.
Concluding his message, he offered prayers for the repose of the Patriarch’s soul, asking that God grant him rest “in the tents of the righteous,” and expressed the wish that his memory be eternal.
