The Orthodox Church of Albania solemnly celebrated the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord on August 6 with festive Divine Liturgies held across the country, led by Archbishop Ioannis of Albania and the Church’s hierarchs.
Archbishop Ioannis presided over the Divine Liturgy at the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior in Tirana, located within the “Tabor” Spiritual Center, concelebrating with Bishop Ignatios of Amantia and clergy of the Archdiocese.
Following the Divine Liturgy, the Archbishop blessed the traditional grapes, explaining that, just as fruit reaches maturity, the feast points to humanity’s ultimate destiny.
“As the fruits are ripe, so today’s feast reveals our final destination,” he said. “The ripening of fruit marks the completion of a cycle, and the true fulfillment of human life is its transformation—the attainment of what Orthodox theology calls theosis, when human beings become partakers of the divine nature. This is the joy of today’s feast.”
Archbishop Ioannis further emphasized that the light revealed by Christ at the Transfiguration was the uncreated light of the divine energies, demonstrating that when human nature is touched by God, it is transformed. He described this transformation as the central invitation of the feast.
Celebrations also took place throughout Albania. In Gjirokastër, Metropolitan Nathanael presided over the Divine Liturgy at the historic Church of the Transfiguration, formerly the city’s cathedral before the construction of the Cathedral of the Resurrection by the late Archbishop Anastasios. Metropolitan Nathanael called on the faithful to transform their lives through God’s grace and become partakers of His uncreated light. The celebration concluded with a procession around the church and the blessing of the loaves.
In Korçë, Metropolitan Anastasios celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the city’s Church of the Transfiguration, while in Grasëm, Elbasan, Metropolitan Antonios presided over the feast, followed by a procession around the church.
Metropolitan Nikolaos of Fier celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the feast-day church in the village of Agim, while an outdoor Vespers service was held at the Shrine of the Transfiguration within the Castle of Berat, drawing worshippers for a prayerful celebration of the feast.
Across Albania, the faithful gathered to commemorate one of the Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church, reflecting on Christ’s Transfiguration as a foretaste of humanity’s calling to share in the divine life through faith and grace.
