In commemoration of the Holy Three Hierarchs (Saint Basil the Great, Saint Gregory the Theologian, and Saint John Chrysostom), on January 30th, the Office of Education of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America organizes some events to celebrate Greek Letters and Arts.
On Thursday, January 30th, Archbishop Elpidophoros of America will be officiating in the Archieratical Divine Liturgy, at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Manhattan.
In attendance, there will be the principals, teachers, and students of the NYC Parochial Greek-American Schools.
Archbishop Elpidophoros of America will address the students on the life and works of the Three Hierarchs emphasizing the importance of our Greek Orthodox faith and heritage.
Following the Liturgy, the Archbishop will cut the Vasilopita for the teachers and administrators in the adjacent Cathedral Community Center.
In the evening of the same day, at 6:30 p.m., a special event will be taking place at the Cathedral Center of the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Manhattan. The guest speaker for the evening event will be Dr. Maximos Constas, Interim Dean of Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Boston, Mass. The title of his presentation is “Sing to the Lord a New Song: The Three Hierarchs and the Theology of Music.”
Following the lecture, a few students from the NYC Parochial Greek-American Day Schools will be presenting a brief speech on the Three Hierarchs. Concluding the presentations, the Cultural Director of Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America along with his choir will perform a musical program.
On Saturday, February 1st, Archbishop Elpidophoros of America will honor the students who excelled in the 2019 Comprehensive Examination in Modern Greek at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Manhattan. The Archbishop will present the students with the Three Hierarchs Award of Excellence.
The New York State Senator, Mr. Andrew Gounardes, representing the 22nd District will be the main speaker. He will speak on “The Importance of Greek language and culture for the American Society.” A Reception will follow the presentation of the Awards, at the Community Center of the Holy Trinity Cathedral.
