On October 9, 2025, the third day of the Holy Synod of the Antiochian Orthodox Church convened at Balamand, featuring a series of panel discussions on political and economic challenges in the region. The sessions were held in the presence of Patriarch John X, the Metropolitans of the Archdioceses, and a large number of distinguished guests. The discussions were moderated by journalist Zeina Yazigi and led by subject-matter experts.
The first session focused on local, regional, and international political dynamics, with presentations by Lebanon’s Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Tarek Mitri and Dr. Paul Salem. The speakers examined the fragmented political landscape of the Middle East and the obstacles to building democratic states—stemming both from external pressures, conflicting policies, and interests, as well as from internal challenges such as religious extremism and ethnic isolationism. They emphasized the Church’s vital role as a bridge for national dialogue, a safe space for unity, and a voice for peace, justice, and human dignity. The speakers also called for a stronger ecclesial presence on regional and international levels, promoting the Church’s vision of citizenship and pluralism while avoiding political polarization.
The second panel addressed the economic situation, featuring insights from former ministers Nicolas Nahas and Raed Khoury, along with businessman Jacques Sarraf. The speakers stressed that economics is not merely about financial transactions or industrial growth, but about human dignity and national prosperity. They described the ongoing economic crisis as structural rather than temporary, framing it as a matter of survival for the people. The session concluded with calls to monitor the social impact of the crisis, launch organized initiatives to support youth employment, and develop a comprehensive Church vision that upholds human dignity and encourages resilience amid hardship.
