An amendment regulating the administration of Mount Athos has been tabled today in the Parliament by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Economy and Development.
According to the amendment, it will be possible, with a Presidential Decree, to appoint a private citizen as Civil Governor of Mount Athos on a voluntary basis, which results in saving €54,300 per year.
As noted in the amendment, these provisions ensure “even more that the Civil Governor of Mount Athos can sufficiently perform his duties to contribute positively to the supervision and resolution of the often complex administrative problems that arise and fall within his competence.”
It is also mentioned that “if a person who knows the Charter of Mount Athos, observes the life of the Holy Community and the dominant Holy Monasteries, has valuable professional – thus administrative too – experience at the same time and chooses (if he does) to provide his services voluntarily, without financial rewards, this further ensures the integrity of his duties, both in Mount Athos and in favour of the state.”
