The Holy Monastery of Esphigmenou on Mount Athos and its Abbot, Archimandrite Bartholomew, were targeted by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In particular, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement regarding “inaccurate reports on Russian issues in the Greek media”.
Among other things, the announcement of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs refers to the statements of the Abbot of the Esphigmenou Monastery, Archimandrite Bartholomew for the presence and action of Russian nationalists in the occupied central building of the monastery with banners of the Russian Empire.
As Bartholomew points out in a statement, “the Abbot of an Athonite Monastery is personally targeted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of a great power with all that this may entail.
What is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece doing to protect the Athonites and the borders of Mount Athos from foreign interventions and threats?”
It is recalled that the Abbot of the Esphigmenou Monastery and in previous statements had sounded the alarm about the Russian penetration of Mount Athos, which according to his statement has been used systematically for the last 20 years to strengthen Russian nationalism.
He warned that “if the Greek state cannot protect Mount Athos, as imposed by the Greek Constitution, it is certain that “Russia will offer” to “protect” it.
