Visitors to Kalabaka and the sacred rock formations of Meteora this Pascha season are in for a breathtaking experience. Meteora is a rock formation in the regional unit of Trikala, in Thessaly, in northwestern Greece, hosting one of the most prominent complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries. Under the initiative “Light Everywhere” (ΦΩΣ ΠΑΝΤΟΥ), the Municipality of Meteora has unveiled a newly upgraded lighting system that transforms the iconic cliffs into a luminous wonder after dark—enhancing the natural majesty of one of Greece’s most awe-inspiring landscapes.
The enhanced illumination not only highlights the dramatic geological formations but also brings renewed spiritual significance during Holy Week. In celebration of Pascha, the municipality has installed striking representations of the Crucifixion and Resurrection in the emblematic “Xenia” recreation area, evoking a deeply reverent and mystical atmosphere.
“This season, Kalabaka and Meteora truly become the spiritual capital of Greek Orthodox Easter,” the Municipality officials said.
In a statement to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA), Mayor Lefteris Avramopoulos emphasized the respectful intent behind the lighting installation: “Meteora doesn’t need lights to impress—it only needs respect. With this new lighting, we didn’t alter its appearance. Instead, we offer a clearer, calmer perspective of what it truly is: a miracle, both night and day.”
Through this project, the timeless beauty and sanctity of Meteora shine anew, offering locals and pilgrims alike a unique opportunity for spiritual reflection amidst one of the most sacred and visually stunning settings in Greece.
