Today, Thursday, September 30, 2021, Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa welcomed with great joy the 20-member mission of the basketball team “Hellenic Sports Organization HELLAS-SUDAN “SPARTANS”, accompanied by Metropolitan Savvas of Nubia, the President of the Greek Community of Khartoum, and the Representative of the Basketball Federation of Sudan, which is in Alexandria for its participation in the Arab Basketball Championship.
It is a Greek club from Sudan, which managed to bring the sport of basketball back to the country, won the domestic championship, and now represents Sudan in the Arab championship.
The Patriarch of Alexandria welcomed the athletes and expressed his joy because they devoted some of their precious time to visit the Historic Center of the Alexandrian Church. Afterwards, the Patriarch made a special reference to Sudan, the historical region of Nubia, and paralleled the importance of the ancient culture of Nubia for the region of Africa, with the role of Ancient Greek and Ancient Egyptian culture in world culture. In addition, he did not fail to mention the Greek element in the region of Sudan as in Khartoum, in Jumba, and in Wawa, we have Greek communities and Greek churches.
In addition, the Prelate of Alexandria informed the athletes about the multifaceted work of the Patriarchate, which extends throughout Africa where there are 2000 schools and 3,000 small hospitals.
In closing, Patriarch Theodore addressing the Metropolitan of Nubia expressed his gratitude for his love and contribution to his flock in Sudan.
