“66 years have passed since the September events, we do not forget the pogrom of the night of September 6, 1955,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, Nikos Dendias in a message on social media.
“It had disastrous consequences for the Greek community of Constantinople,” he pointed out, “and was the beginning of its subsequent dramatic decline, in violation of the Treaty of Lausanne.”
In addition, Nikos Dendias noted: “The pogrom also removed from Constantinople a potential economic and cultural element. The part of Turkish society that looks forward to Europe has become poorer.”
The post of the Greek foreign minister, in addition to his message, includes a photo with Patriarch Athenagoras on the ruins of a destroyed church.
