The 48th Clergy-Laity Congress of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America officially opened in Cleveland, Ohio, bringing together clergy and lay representatives from across the Archdiocese to reflect on the Church’s mission, ministries, and future growth.
Hosted by the Holy Metropolis of Pittsburgh under the leadership of Metropolitan Savas, the Congress was held under the theme “Let Us Rise and Build” (“Ἀναστῶμεν καὶ οἰκοδομήσωμεν”), emphasizing parish development and the strengthening of Orthodox Christian communities throughout the United States.
The proceedings began with the Service of Blessing (Agiasmos), presided over by Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, who formally inaugurated the week’s sessions. Throughout the Congress, participants engaged in workshops, panel discussions, worship services, and presentations highlighting the diverse ministries and initiatives of the Archdiocese.
A key address was delivered by Theo Nicolakis, Director of Ministries and Information Technology for the Archdiocese, who outlined the priorities and strategic vision of the Archdiocesan Ministries. His presentation underscored the role of innovation, collaboration, and service in advancing the Church’s mission.
Among the notable developments of this year’s gathering was the presentation of a new comprehensive Religious Education curriculum for all grade levels, from kindergarten through high school. Developed by the Department of Religious Education (DRE), the curriculum fulfills a commitment made at the 2024 Clergy-Laity Congress and aims to provide a unified framework for Orthodox Christian formation across the Archdiocese.
The Congress also addressed important administrative and financial matters. During the plenary session on July 2, clergy and lay delegates discussed and approved the Archdiocese’s budgets for 2027 and 2028, while considering legislative, governance, and stewardship issues affecting the life of the Church.
A highlight of the gathering was the Synodal Hierarchical Divine Liturgy celebrated on July 1 and presided over by Archbishop Elpidophoros. The participation of hierarchs, clergy, and lay delegates underscored the unity of the Church and reaffirmed that all decisions and initiatives of the Congress flow from the shared liturgical life of the faithful.
The conclusion of the 48th Clergy-Laity Congress marked another significant milestone for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, reaffirming its commitment to building vibrant parishes, strengthening ministries, and advancing its mission through faith, unity, and service.
