For the 18th year, Patmos, with its exceptional Festival, is revealing unique musical moments.
The 18th Patmos Sacred Music Festival, entitled “The Holy Revelation of Music”, with Alkis Baltas as Artistic Director, will be hosted from Thursday, August 29 to Tuesday, September 3, 2019, at the open air theatre of the Holy Cave of the Apocalypse.
The Patmos Sacred Music Festival, launched in 2001, has been established as one of the country’s most important summer music events. It takes place at the open air theatre of the Cave of the Apocalypse, situated in front of the imposing Sacred Cave where John the Theologian wrote the Book of Revelation. The sacred cave has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Festival, an annual meeting of art and spirituality, harmoniously combines the sanctity of the place and the beautiful nature with the high artistic level of the concerts.
As a thematic festival, for about two decades, it has retained its character by presenting important musical works that are inspired by the Christian faith.
The 18th Sacred Music Festival hosts an artistic program that covers a wide range of musical creation:
The “Saint Dionysios of Mount Olympus” Byzantine Choir of the Byzantine Music and Traditional Instruments School of Pieria Region, conducted by Dimitrios Manoussis, will perform Byzantine hymns as well as folk songs of religious content accompanied by traditional instruments.
In a high-level musical evening, pianists Vicky Stylianou and Theodore Tzovanakis, and flutist Zacharias Tarpagkos will perform sacred works by Johann Sebastian Bach and composers of the romantic era.
“Manus Apertae” vocal ensemble in collaboration with internationally renowned saxophonist Theodore Kerkezos, and conducted by Myrsini Hatzikonstanti and Sergios Giotis, will perform an extremely interesting and original program including choral works of various periods of musical history.
The Patmos Festival Orchestra, staffed by highly experienced professional musicians, conducted by Alkis Baltas, will perform important sacred works of the classical repertoire. The soloist of the concert is Anna Stylianaki, well known soprano.
Within the framework of the Sacred Music Festival, the Festival Orchestra, conducted by Alkis Baltas, and narrator Anna-Moscha Kambosou, will present at the “Patmion” Cultural Center an entertaining and, at the same time, educational music program addressed to children ages 5 to 12 years.
The festival will close with a great Russian participation. The “Dersava” Men’s Orthodox Choir, conducted by Elias Nikolajevic Melnikov, will perform Byzantine hymns and sacred choral works.
