Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv and All Ukraine hosted Brigadier General Hennadii Shapovalov, Commander of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, at his residence on July 18, 2025. The meeting also included Colonel Larysa Polyanska, Head of the Military Chaplaincy Service of the Ground Forces Command.
The discussion focused on the current security challenges Ukraine faces, particularly the ongoing resistance against Russian aggression. The parties also addressed the misuse of the Moscow Patriarchate’s structures by the occupying forces to further their unlawful aims. International diplomacy, the critical need to unite global support for Ukraine, and the country’s socio-political climate were also key topics. The importance of providing spiritual and moral support to Ukraine’s defenders was strongly emphasized.
A significant part of the dialogue was dedicated to advancing cooperation between the Church and the Ground Forces, including the further development of military chaplaincy. This involves refining the procedures for appointing clergy as military chaplains and expanding collaboration in the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers and veterans.
Metropolitan Epifaniy underscored: “The struggle against the Russian invaders for the freedom of our people remains intense and sacrificial. Our generation faces the crucial mission of preserving both our State and our Church. This is a profound responsibility and challenge that we can only overcome through steadfast faith and unity. May the Lord continue to grant us strength and guidance.”
